Inspiration Floats On The Wind #mfrwauthor

Welcome to week 14 of the 52-week blog challenge. This week's topic is story inspiration.

I find inspiration in various aspects of the world around me. A verse of music, a few notes of a tune or a photo from some exotic place can trigger an idea. But not all inspiration is the same. Sometimes a dream awakens me in the middle of the night and gives the overall storyline for a new work or a scene unfolds like a scene from a movie.

Those are
inspiration for a specific item. Then there is the writing inspiration. The music or image that transports you to another world. For fantasy worlds, celtic flute gives me dragon wings or lets me sail with mages.

Pictures provide a ground in a setting while the music invites the muse to visit.

Sometimes the inspiration comes from the story and the characters themselves. When the end was typed for Hatchling's Mate there were several characters whose ultimate fates remained to be determined. Their paths could be sealed by vengeance or redeemed by love. The storyline was a new approach I wanted to explore and I took the inspiration from the characters themselves. And the result was Hatchling's Vengeance.

Stop by the other authors in the challenge to see what inspires them. And come back each week for new insights into the authors of MFRW and their writing life.

~till next time, Helen

  1. Great post! I've used picture prompts for stories, as well as word prompts, people around me, something that wsa said on tv, in conversation - the sources are endless! Kind of ties into your previous post about details.

    1. Pictures are great as they cantake us to places we've ever been.

  2. The characters we create for one story can drive the next, that's how I ended up with my current WIP. Music plays a big roll while I'm writing to help with moving a scene forward.

    1. I love to tell a good story, even when the characters take over.

    1. Thanks for stopping by. I gravitate to specific pieces of music. Some just get me singing and distracted. Country music anyone?

  4. Sometimes a book cover will make me think of the story I would write for that cover. I've never been inspired by music, but I don't listen to it often. When I do, I respond more physically than mentally. So no stories.

  5. Anything can come from anywhere. I always carry a journal and keep index cards and paper around the house to write ideas at a moment's notice.

    1. I carry a small purse journal and have paper around too, but my problem is when I get an idea early in the morning and I can't move to write it down. Love index cards idea. Now if I could only find where I put the note. Thanks for stopping by.

  6. I also use sticky note (and the sticky note app on my phone) when inspiration strikes. I have a folder on my PC for potential stories that I hope to get to someday.
On a side note, many thanks, Helen, for posting the link to this week's blog challenge on the group thread. You saved me! I forgot about the 52-wekk tab they added and I was all over the #MFRWauthor website trying to find the post to sign up. :)
