Meet Haldric #mfrwhooks

Continuing the series of posts introducing some of my favorite people (or people I love to hate) from the fantasy romances of the Dragshi Chronicles, you are invited to meet Haldric. Or is it Caldrih? You'll have to read both Hatchling's Mate and Hatchling's Vengeance.

Physical Description

Red hair, color off, not the true red of the true-bloods of the area.

Background

He was raised by his Uncle Waljan. Known as the Parant, Waljan is a cult leader who controls his flock with the hypnotic power of his voice.  One of the reasons why Haldric was his uncle's assistant, is that he was immune to his uncle's mesmer.

Like his uncle, Waljan hates dragons and shifters because of his ancestors' death at their hands. Another similarity is that in Hatchling's Mate, Haldric is lecherous. Although he often had to take second place to his uncle when a beautiful woman joined the cult.

More About Her (Secrets or Public)

A different side of Haldric is seen in Hatchling's Vengeance. And he has a different name also, Caldrih.

I hope you enjoyed this introduction to Haldric  Find excerpts by clicking on the covers in the top banner. Buy links for Hatchling's Mate or Hatchling's Vengeance along with the rest of the Dragshi Chronicles is below.

Hooked on Hatchling's Mate, Breathe #mfrwauthor

To set the scene, against all orders, Talann swam across a flooded river to save women and children stranded on a hill. After successfully taking across a rope that served as the foundation to tow a barge back and forth. The women, children, and horses across, Talann is returning to the safe side of the river with his stallion, a mare and her very skittish colt. The makeshift barge capsizes and its precious contents are tossed into the raging waters. Talann's rescue is just the beginning.

Excerpt:

A moan escaped Glyn the sight of the unconscious man’s blue skin. “He’s not breathing.” All the years training by the various weaponsmasters surged forward. “Kynan, help me. We can help Talann breathe until Lexii sets the broken ribs.” She dropped to her knees. Deep breaths calmed her shaking hands enough to hold his head steady. "I’ll keep Tal from moving. Ky, you place the bones."

<Hurry,> Lexii sent. Fear darkened the dragshi’s tone.

Lexii is worried about more than the death of a friend, Glyn realized. One day, Talann is supposed to be her mate.

As soon as the twisted limbs were arranged to as close a position as normal, Kynan backed away. “Now, Lexii,” he yelled. “Use your healing fire.”

The golden head lowered to Glyn’s level. Air sucked down the dragon’s throat in a noisy gulp. A heartbeat later, Lexii released it as a stream of blue fire. Light encompassed both Glyn and Talann.

“Hang on, Talann,” Glyn whispered.

Silver voices rang in Glyn’s head. Is Talann going through first change? No, she corrected. It must be Lexii and the rest of the dragshi calling out to him. Binding his body and soul to each other with the force of their will—and love.

Again and again the flames played over Talann. Beneath Glyn’s hands, she felt the crushed bones meld together, returning to their prior strength and form. Without a command, Kynan knelt down and pressed on Talann’s chest. He repeated the action a second and a third time.

“Breathe, Talann,” Glyn cajoled.

<Live my son,> his parents sent.

Another fragment of training, this time from the healers rather than the ceoltiers, flickered into Glyn’s mind. Leaning over, with two fingers she pinched Talann’s nose closed, and mouth to mouth forced air into his lungs. Every third push of his chest, she gave her breath of life.

Soon nothing in the world existed except Kynan’s, “Now,” ordering more air for Talann. The specter of death lingered in the air. Talann’s skin remained pale, his body unresponsive.

Despair whether their efforts could bring Talann back to life chilled Glyn’s soul. She grabbed onto the last thread of the mental link between them and threw the full force of her will into one final command. <Talann, return to us> Again, the unbidden sentiment, Return to me, whispered into being only to be quashed. Talann is Lexii’s. He cannot be anything but a friend.

Hatchling's Mate - From their birth it was expected that Talann’s and Lexii’s destiny would be entwined. However fate had other intentions. Lexii and Talann could not stand to be together.

Here's a snippit from the review.

Hooked on First Change, Festival #MFRWhooks

The dragshi are more than just a man or woman. Each are two beings–one a dragon, the other a human–sharing one body in space in time and able to change forms with the other at will. Their world and the adventures of the dragon shifters are recorded in the Dragshi Chronicles.

Within each of the chronicles, the ceoltiers, the keepers of the past and teachers of the present, recount some legend. As with all such tales, some contain larger than life deeds. Others are the simple story of a man or woman doing what must be done, regardless of the cost. Sometimes embellished, the ceoltiers use the stories of times and actions past to educate and inspire.

Unlike the previous works in the series which related to the trader girl Anastasia and Lord Branin Llewlyn, First Change features the real story behind the legends told in the previous volumes. First Change contains five stories of duty and honor, love and loss, happiness and despair from the chronicles. As with all such tales, some contain larger than life deeds. Others are the simple story of a man or woman doing what must be done, regardless of the cost.

Last week's excerpt, Shadowed Night, from MAGIC AND STEEL, had Kedar escorting the Lady Mairin to a festival. Among the things on his mind was her obstinancy, threats to her life--and his attraction to her.

Now this week's excerpt:

Kedar's gaze lingered on a man coming out of an inn. Dark red hair marked him as a member of a northern clan. Although the stranger’s clothes were those of a merchant, his movements told of a familiarity with weapons—or the mercenary life.

Faoth’s snarl from a few paces behind agreed with Kedar’s assessment of the man’s threat, and confirmed who amongst the crowd had triggered his alert. “Faoth, track,” he hissed. The gold blur that was the dog slipped around into the street, then fell into position to follow the tall stranger. Moments later, Faoth disappeared into an unlit alley.

His fingers gripping the hilt of a hidden knife, Kedar didn’t slow his approach. He merely dropped his arm from around Mairin and stepped to her left, placing himself between her and the alley.

...They passed the alley without incident. Swept along by the thickening crowd, Kedar maintained his tense surveillance. Footsteps hurried up behind them. Trapped by the narrowed entrance onto the beach, his shoulder tensed, awaiting an attack. None occurred and the newcomer, an apprentice in a flour-covered apron, veered off into a bakery.

A light brush on Kedar’s leg heralded Faoth’s return. She padded at his side, her head swiveling back and forth as if tracking someone. After a whimper, the dog looked up for instructions. He dropped a hand down to pat Faoth on the head. “It’s okay, girl,” he said in a low tone that couldn’t be heard above the conversations of the other partiers. “We’ll find him later.”

Stars and More Stars #MFRWauthor

Welcome to the 52-week challenge. Only a few more weeks to go and the topic is about bragging. We can brag about our children or grandchildren. Or, something else close to our hearts. Everyone in the challenge are authors. We've spent months, years, or even decades creating a book. They are part of us. Yet we send them out into the hard, cruel world. This week allows us to brag about them. So as a proud writer, here's a few words from the four and five star reviews and other comments made about my babies. Oops, I mean my creations.

And, if one of the books looks interesting, click on the cover at the top of the blog for excerpts and buy links. And don't forget the bragging by the other authors in the challenge. You might find your next favorite author. ~till next time, Helen

Excerpt from Between Swords and Sickness:

Geelneach balanced his last arrow in his hand, ready to be strung. Exhaustion made the bow useless and he tossed the worthless bolt to the ground. Voices from the other side of the wall told of the enemy’s approach. He pulled his sword and stepped into the open.

“Time for us to tangle, Drust.”

The demand of duty is only the first hurdle when it requires risking life and limb in a mating flight. Fate decrees mating fights don’t always involve the partner you want.

Finding your mate is only half the battle. Keeping them alive is the other. Sometimes not even dragon fire and talons are enough to overcome the mind control wielded by the leader called—the Parant.
