Obedience Will Be Enforced, Imprisoned in Stone #WeWriWa

Welcome to Weekend Writing Warriors, the weekly hop for everyone who loves to write ... and read!

Today's excerpt is from the dark fantasy Imprisoned in Stone. To set, the scene. Cuhlrich, the head of the Brethren has decreed a successor will be created. What Colwynn and the woman chosen for him want is irrelevant. Love is not required. If seduction fails, magic will enforce obedience.  Now the Sunday Snippet.

Excerpt

With two fingers Aine pulled a wild rose from the circlet of blooms in her hair. She held the flower to her lips and blew, wafting the delicate scent to Colwynn. A shock ran up his back. Icy cords of a spell wrapped around his heart. Between one beat and the next, the vice of the geas tightened. He grabbed for a lifeline—the ring his mother had worn most of her life. Light flashed from the garnet stone on his finger.

A Dream and a Warning, Fire and Amulet, #wewrwa

Welcome to Weekend Writing Warriors, the weekly hop for everyone who loves to write ... and read. From Fire and Amulet, Book 1 of my  fantasy series, The Tear Stone Collectors.  And now the SundaySnippet.

 Excerpt:

Deneas opened her eyes to a darkness unbroken by even the faint glow of the crescent moon. Unease permeated her being. Her mother’s presence filled the empty house. The echo of words hung in the air, elusive and refusing to be captured. Her finger grazed her cheek where warmth from the light touch of a kiss still lingered.

The dream was obviously a warning, but of what remained unknown. The nightmares had been coming more frequently since the new moon, growing stronger each night. “Tonight’s was the worst.” Although she didn’t mean to do so, the words came out in a whisper.

Sea Tribute, Windmaster #WeWriWa #SnippetSunday

Welcome to Weekend Writing Warriors, the weekly hop for everyone who loves to write ... and read!

Today's excerpt is from Windmaster, the first book of the fantasy, romance series, the Windmaster Novels. To set, the scene, Sea Falcon was attacked by a pirate ship. Thanks to the skill of the crew and the archmage's powers and sword, the ship won the conflict. But it came with a price. The crew's tribute to their lost crewman is told in the post, Burial At Sea. But there is more than human acknowledgement of the boy's sacrifice as he died to save his captain. And now the SundaySnippet, a different kind of tribute to a lost sailor.

Excerpt

A crewman’s cry of surprise at the two shipfish who rose alongside the ship broke Ellspeth’s inward focus. She felt the crew’s awe as the sea creatures’ whispery sounds repeated the funeral dirge. Their silver bodies surged upward to balance on split tails. “Almost like the King’s Guard,” a grizzled crewman at the rail offered. His observation of an honor guard came true when two more shipfish surfaced—the body balanced between their large back fins. The Sea Falcon’s crew stood motionless while eerie whistles echoed across the lake. When the final note of the unusual dirge faded away, the shipfish and their cherished burden slipped out of sight. Full dark had settled upon the still lake before the crew sought their bunks.

Unwilling to move, Ellspeth stood alone at the bow rail.

Today's excerpt is from Windmaster, the first book of the fantasy, romance series, the Windmaster Novels. To set, the scene, Sea Falcon has been boarded.  And now the SundaySnippet.

Excerpt:

“Masts ho, on the starboard bow.” Before she could act, another yell reached the already edgy crew. “Pirates! She flies a black banner crossed by white lightning.”

“Pirates! All hands to arms!” Ellspeth’s voice, pitched for battle, carried from one end of the ship to the other. “Prepare to repel boarders. No quarter!”

The Sea Falcon’s first officer spun the ship’s wheel in an attempt to avoid the unseen object. The screech of hull on hull pierced the air.

Keep Quiet, Imprisoned in Stone #wewrwa

Welcome to Weekend Writing Warriors, the weekly hop for everyone who loves to write! Today's excerpt is from the dark fantasy Imprisoned in Stone. This scene takes place the morning after the post, An Intruder. Maerva confides to her brother, Arcil, captain of the fishing vessel, Wayward Bound, and gets a surprising order. And now the Sunday Snippet.

Excerpt

Maerva glanced around to see who might be listening. Suliceen was down at the far table, supervising those wrapping the fish in leaves for smoking. Ruadhan paced up and down the line, but Maerva did not worry about her father overhearing. He only had ears for the count passed to him by the heads of the various teams slicing the fillets or piling the whole fish into man-high stacks in the smoking caves.

“I had a strange dream last night,” she said in a low voice. In between calls for more fish, she told Arcil about the unseen presence and its ghostly message.

“Don’t tell anyone,” he hissed. “Especially not our parents.”

His tone reminded Maerva of Arcil’s position. He captained a ship and knew many things beyond her ken. Why he wanted the dream kept private seemed strange, but she would do as he asked.
