Hooked on Imprisoned In Stone, Hope Lost #mfrwhooks

Showcasing magic of a darker kind, Imprisoned in Stone.

To set the stage, Colwynn continues to search for a means to escape the inescapable cell. He had thought he had found a faint hope, but now it is lost.

Excerpt:

Colwynn called up his powers. The blue globe shimmered in his hand, warming it. He peeled the ball, then took the threads and wove them into a narrow rope. With infinite care, he threaded it along the purple marks on the wall that bore Nemor’s unique signature. The blocking spell fought Colwynn. His magic faded, then brightened as he fed more strength into it. Finally, his message slipped past the confines of the cell. He cast it outward to the cosmos. “Gareth, save Maerva.”

However, each time he repeated the sequence, he had less to fight with. The cell drained his strength and his powers. Yet, he continued to send. “Power bound. Dungeon in Sleuchdair. Save Maerva.”

The blue threads dimmed again one last time, then flickered into nothingness.

Hooked on Imprisoned In Stone, Hope #mfrwhooks

Showcasing magic of a darker kind, Imprisoned in Stone.

To set the stage, Colwynn continues to search for a means to escape the inescapable cell.

Excerpt:

A light touch, as if someone laid a hand on his shoulder, sent comforting warmth through his body. It was the same feeling as a benison—Tralin’s benison. The one she bestowed upon him and Gareth the morning of their parting. At first he discarded Gareth as a focus. The weaponsmith was not a full mage and probably would not receive the message. However, since Maerva could not be involved, Gareth was the only choice.

I feel Tralin’s blessing–the blessing will tie Gareth and me together.

The hope was faint, but hope still the same.

Pushing off the wall to his feet, he paced the featureless cell. Physical movement cleared his mind and he started examining the runes. One by one, he again parsed the restrictions and bindings to see if he could find a weak link among the interwoven enchantments. This time he could not even use his own spell to send a message. It was gone. Maybe if he tried the call through one written by a friendly member of the Brethren. Even as he thought it, he knew there was no such creature, only enemies and fanatics. However, there were two he had worked magic with–his father and Nemor.

“I don’t dare touch my father’s magic,” Colwynn muttered. “He would have a trap on it, but Nemor?”

Hooked on Imprisoned in Stone, An Inescapable Cell #mfrwauthor

For the next several weeks, the posts will showcase magic of a darker kind, Imprisoned in Stone.

To set the stage, last week Maerva searched for a means to find the missing Colwynn. This week brings some insights into what happened. Colwynn is a prisoner of the Brethren. And his tormentor is Nemor, second in command of the Brethren.

Excerpt:

The grace by which the older mage faced her death awakened Colwynn’s own inner strength. He pushed himself to a sitting position and then slowly to his feet. Even though the blocking spells absorbed most of the light emitted from the single candle high on the wall, he used the wan glow to examine the room. Stone by stone, he searched for a way out, either through magic or physical force. His questing fingers found only walls worked smooth by those of countless prisoners. Each time he found a hint of magic and tried to summon his own powers, the prison absorbed them, eating away his strength. Although he spotted his own spell interwoven among those who over the years had placed the restraint on the cell, the faint hope it provided quickly vanished. As he watched in hopeless frustration, his spell faded, dispersed by those of the Brethren members.

His back against the wall, Colwynn slid to the floor. He considered one approach after another, then discarded it. Who could he call upon for help? Gareth’s powers were too weak. And the only other wizards he knew were confirmed members of the Brethren. Only one person had the possibility of reaching him—Maerva.

Gathering his magic, he pictured her in his mind. A prayer on his lips, he cast out a desperate call.

Dead silence greeted his effort.

Hooked on Imprisoned in Stone, Encounter #mfrwauthor #BookQW

Magic of a darker kind. Imprisoned in Stone.

For the crime of healing without payment, the Brethren imprisoned Dylan’s soul in stone. Every full moon, they awakened him and renewed the bonds. When the blood dried on the stone, his awareness faded, but during those few brief moments, he had one thought--revenge. He embraces the pain of an awakening to reach out into the world beyond his stone prison. When a mind touches his and hope for escape from his eternal prison soars. However, his possible savior is unaware of her latent magic, the power needed to free him.

A snippit using the BookQW, "Encounter." To set the stage, Colwyn has disappeared and Maerva searches for him. All is not what it seems, there is magic involved.

Excerpt:

Maerva halted in mid-step. She glanced around the kitchen to see if she could find the cause of her unease, but nothing seemed out of place. The canines lashed to the spit yelped as they ran in circles. For a second time, the faint tickle whispered at the edge of her mind. Something or someone summoned her. The sensation felt different than any mental contact she had ever encountered. The caress of a lover’s touch mingled with the sharp edge of a blade. After making sure no one paid attention to her, she strode from the kitchen. Once out of sight of the workers, she raced in response to the irresistible summons.

The closer she approached the rooms the headmistress of Sleuchdair said were being used by special visitors from Bleve Aibheis, the surer her belief became that danger was nearby—and Colwynn was at the heart of it.

For the crime of healing without payment, the Brethren imprisoned Dylan’s soul in stone. Every full moon, they awakened him and renewed the bonds. When the blood dried on the stone, his awareness faded, but during those few brief moments, he had one thought--revenge. However, his possible savior is unaware of her latent magic, the power needed to free him.

To set the stage, Colwynn arrives at the site of the bound mage.

Excerpt:

The arrival of another dozen heavily-armed, brown-robed monks provided the needed opportunity to escape from the intense focus of the leaders of the Brethren. While his father was occupied with reports from the newcomers, Colwynn pulled on the reins. Kai slowed in response to the silent command and horse and man fell back through the column of men until Colwynn rode alone.

The normal sound of insects shaking off the winter died. Even the soft breeze ruffling the leaves stilled as if cut by a blade. Every man stopped, their breaths held. Standing in the stirrups, Colwynn saw Nemor gesture. Instead of a narrow animal trail curving towards the distant mountain peak, a torch-lit path now led straight through the thick clump of trees. Pressed from behind by the two horses of the rear guard, Colwynn followed the rest of the Brethren into a small clearing.

A solitary beam of sunlight filtered through the dense canopy of overhead branches and sparkled on a small black pillar.

His already stressed nerves tingled. Within the mark, a soul cried out for release. And vengeance?

Hooked on Imprisoned in Stone, Hide #MFRWHooks #Bookqw

An excerpt from Imprisoned in Stone using the #Bookqw "Hide." To set the stage, Maerva is caught in the library by Colwynn's father.

Excerpt:

Colwynn bowed his head to take his father’s censure. At least Maerva was safe. Now he had to figure out how to handle his father’s rage at Maerva’s presence in the library—a place by the Brethren’s decree that allowed no woman. The pain of a blood-letting burned again on his skin and in his brain. He could not allow Maerva to suffer the ritual.

Cuhlwch stalked back and forth between the shelves and the work table. “You nicely explained that female’s presence here, but not yours,” the head of the Brethren growled.

Knowing his father’s mood, Colwynn decided instead of the usual stance of subservience, his best defense was to stand his ground. After summoning a block behind which to hide his true emotions, he raised his gaze to meet his father’s. “I was following your orders regarding control and geas. Some of the notes I found at Tralin’s were missing pieces. I’m trying to find them. To master the ritual, you need to understand it. I’m hoping to find answers to complete the spell.”

A piercing stare ripped through Colwynn. Unlike the earlier occasions when he took a submissive stance, this time he stood with his feet braced shoulder-width apart, his back straight, and his head held high.

Hooked on Imprisoned in Stone, Gloom #mfrwhooks

For the next several weeks, the posts will showcase magic of a darker kind. Imprisoned in Stone

However, his possible savior is unaware of her latent magic, the power needed to free him.

An excerpt using the #Bookqw "Gloom."  To set the stage, Maerva, Gareth, and Colwynn will be leaving in the morning to go to the stronghold of the Brethren.

Excerpt:

The opening of the door shifted her gaze in time to see Tralin enter the room and gesture toward the bed. Maerva remained awake, but her muscles refused to obey commands. Anger flared, how could Tralin put a spell of rest on her. Whatever magic Tralin used sapped Maerva’s will. She could not move or cry out.

Tralin crossed the floor with silent steps. After a long consideration of the leather pouch she clutched in her hand, she slipped it into Maerva’s pack.

The effort to stay awake proved too hard and Maerva’s eyes closed. She sensed Tralin standing over her. After a moment, the older mage ran a light finger down Maerva’s cheek. “I’m sorry, Maerva. I can no longer be of service to you. My greatest treasure is now yours. It will be there when you need it. Until then, it will be with you, unseen.” A single tear dropped onto Maerva’s hand. “Be safe my child.”

The door closed creating a darkness unbroken by either candle or star. In the gloom, tears dampened Maerva’s pillow.

Hooked on Imprisoned in Stone, Damage #MFRWHooks

Like the previous posts, this one will showcase an excerpt from Imprisoned in Stone. To set the stage for the snippit using the #Bookqw "damage," the Brethren have invaded the island where Maerva and her friends have taken sanctuary. Last week, Maerva found out what happened to her adopted child, now she is ready to take the fight to the Brethren.

Excerpt:

Quiet commands split the now-armed men into teams. Sketching a rough map in the sand, she issued orders for their search areas. With a dog leading each one, they headed out until only one man and one dog remained. “Sorry, ma’am, Arcil told me to go with you.”

The man’s size ruined any possibility of argument—at least without incurring injury. And she meant to use all her energy to do damage to the Brethren. Nodding for the sailor to follow her, Maerva turned and headed up the steep path to the high meadow. Something drew her to select that specific quadrant. Reaching the tall grass, she headed unerringly toward the tree line.

Bow strings twanged and a volley of arrows flew by. A leg swung hers out from beneath her. Maerva fell to the ground, tripped by the sailor behind her. Strings twanged a second time. The dog, who had raced ahead, yelped in pain. Low moans from the man next to her provided proof not all the hidden archers missed. Stones pricked Maerva’s hands and knees as she crawled through the tall grass to the man and dog. A quick exam of both proved that neither was seriously wounded, but neither would be any use in battle. Despite their objections, Maerva ordered them both to stay, and keeping as low as she could, ran on alone.

Within the trees, she slowed her pace. The farther in she went, the quieter the woods became, void of all the usual sounds of both bird and insect. A twig snapped behind her. Maerva spun, sword in hand.

Hooked on Imprisoned in Stone, Surprise at the Cave #MFRWHooks

For the next several weeks, the posts have showcased magic of a darker kind. From Imprisoned in Stone, a snippit using the #Bookqw "good." To set the stage, last week the escape continued when Maerva met her brother. In the interim he sailed her and her friends to a deserted isle. Sanctuary is elusive as the Brethren have invaded the island. And her adopted child is missing.

Excerpt:

Maerva paced the beach, as if her activity could bring the men to shore faster. Small boats from both vessels ferried Darach and his kin, including Dris, now sporting his own throwing ax, to the shore. Soon the woodcutters stood amidst sailors, who though they bore the mark of blade or hook, all projected a fierce determination. Each man clutched a knife or whatever makeshift weapon he had. After a quiet farewell, Uisge headed back to his vessel. Sails bellied out in the stiff breeze and the Highland Maid headed out to sea. The Wayward Mist awaited a final signal from her captain before she would leave for a secluded hiding place with the children and women of Darach’s kin who could not fight.

Looking at those gathered around her, one thing was apparent, they needed more arms. Although she wanted to run to find Colwynn and Dylan, Maerva kept her pace to a fast walk—and headed to the skip jack cave rather than inland. The maw of the cave’s entrance appeared all too quickly. Arcil brushed past with a lit torch in his hands. Low growls stopped him in his tracks. Four large shapes separated from the shadows. Light glinted off fangs

“Arcil, wait,” Maerva called out. She stepped forward, her hands held outward. The shapes resolved into large dogs. The animals lapped at her hands, then sat at her quiet command. A gesture sent the men behind her to several boxes stacked above the high-water line. “Weapons are in there, help yourselves.” Although the dogs eyed the men balefully, they did not move. Kneeling, Maerva patted the dogs on the heads. “Why are you here, boys?”

One dog took Maerva’s hand in his mouth and guided her toward the tarp-covered boat. She lifted the canvas and peered underneath. Gramail slept peacefully under a scrap of canvas; her head cushioned on a dog. She woke up and held a finger to her lips

Reaching in, Maerva fought back tears and cradled the child.

“Daddy said it was time to play the shhhsh game.” The four-year-old smiled showing a missing front tooth. “Did I do good, Mommy?”

The trust in the child’s eyes eroded Maerva’s control even more. “Yes, little one you did good, very good. Would you like to visit Uncle Arcil’s boat?”

“Yes, Mommy,” Gramail chirped.

“Then, you shall.” Maerva waved Dris and Wayward Mist’s young deckhand forward. “You remember Jonus. And this is Dris, a special friend of mine. They will take you to the boat, but only if you promise to do what they tell you.”

“No.” Dris and Jonus echoed in unison. “We stay and fight.”

Maerva signaled Arcil to silence. She grew in stature, then retreated back into herself. Her expression softened. “Jonus, Wayward Mist is shorthanded. She needs you more than ever. And you are very good with the children.” A hand laid on Dris’ shoulder did nothing to remove his closed expression. “Dris, your axe is needed more on the Mist than on land. Others are here, but none can take your place there.”

Both youths’ downcast eyes argued their approval, albeit unwillingly. They nodded their compliance.

Hooked on Imprisoned in Stone, Reunion #MFRWHooks

For the next several weeks, the posts will showcase magic of a darker kind. From Imprisoned in Stone,  this scene follows the post, BookQW Eager. To set the stage, Maerva, Colwynn, and Dylan are on the run from the Brethren. And now the reunion between Maerva and her brother Arcil.

Excerpt:

Despite a need to see her brother, Maerva curbed an instinct to gallop to the tavern and kept Rascal to a slow walk. The few tradesmen and sailors in the streets ignored the small caravan. Shortly, music and the off-key singing of drunken sailors announced their destination.

“Mar!”

The familiar voice from the shadowed doorway ripped through the last of her restraints. She swung a leg over Rascal’s neck, and slid to the ground—right into her brother’s arms. “Oh, Arcil.” Tears she had restrained since Gareth’s death moistened her cheeks.

The energy that had sustained her fled and she didn’t resist when Arcil guided her toward the inn’s private courtyard. “Now, Maerva, tell me. What is wrong?”

The energy that had sustained her fled and she didn’t resist when Arcil guided her toward the inn’s private courtyard. “Now, Maerva, tell me. What is wrong?”

Several deep breaths restored her composure enough, she was able to speak. “The Brethren are after us. How soon can you be ready to sail?”

Arcil rubbed a hand over his short beard. The rasp sounded loud, even over the noise within the pub.

“The crew is on liberty. I’m not sure I could even find them all. Will the dawn tide be soon enough? My men will be at their posts by then.” He squeezed Maerva’s hand. “Erbras is no friend to the brown-robes. You’ll be safe.” His face beamed with pride. “I have a new ship, Wayward Mist. Father wasn’t happy when I announced her home port would not be Iolair Creag, but he had no say. The council of the shipbuilder’s craft gave her to me.” Arcil’s voice rose in excitement. “Wait until you see her. The Mist is bigger and twice as fast as the Bound. It might be tight quarters with an extra three bodies, but you can sleep on the ship tonight.” He hesitated as if recovering a memory. “You said that will help shield you from the Brethren’s magic.”

His enthusiasm pushed away more of the darkness in her mind. Maerva’s breath gushed out in relief

Hooked on Imprisoned in Stone, BookQW Eager #MFRWHooks

For the next several weeks, the posts will showcase magic of a darker kind. From Imprisoned in Stone, a snippit using the #Bookqw "eager." To set the stage, Maerva, Colwynn, and Dylan are on the run from the Brethren.

Excerpt:

Every movement in the shadows tightened Maerva’s fingers on the hilt of her sword. Although she saw no signs of pursuit, the threat of the Brethren remained. Eagerness to see her brother warred with Maerva’s fear that Arcil had already left port, cutting off that avenue of escape. The gently rocking masts of anchored ships in Erbras harbor and the familiar tang of salt air brought by the gentle breezes did nothing to ease her racing thoughts. A few feet farther up the street, Dylan led the small caravan through the rapidly-darkening town. The surety of his direction raised questions. How much of Gareth still existed in the body controlled by Dylan? Did some blending of their spirits occur when the binding between this life and the next, and between the stone and soul separated?

Dylan halted his mount and waved for Maerva and Colwynn to close up. He gestured down an alley. “The building on the left is Kennat’s store. He has no love for the Brethren, and as storekeeper, if anyone has news of Wayward Bound, he will.” Dylan dismounted, turned over the reins to Colwynn and with a glance both ways, left the alley. His footsteps rumbled on the porch boards, then silence settled over the area.

Maerva strained to hear the conversation within the building, but no matter how long she held her breath, no sounds rose above her pounding pulse. Heavy footsteps sent her hand to the hilt of her sword.

“It’s me,” Dylan hissed. “Bring the horses.” He stepped around the corner. His broad smile heralded good news. “Kennat said a trading vessel named Wayward Mist under Arcil’s command docked yesterday. Arcil, or some of his crew, should be at the Sailfish Inn. Apparently, the first officer of the Bound was promoted and took over as her captain.”

Despite a need to see her brother, Maerva curbed an instinct to gallop to the tavern and kept Rascal to a slow walk.

Hooked on Imprisoned in Stone, Revenge Approaches #mfrwauthor #mfrwhooks

A teaser of magic of a darker kind from Imprisoned in Stone. For the crime of healing without payment, the Brethren imprisoned Dylan’s soul in stone. Every full moon, they awakened him and renewed the bonds. When the blood dried on the stone, his awareness faded, but during those few brief moments, he had one thought--revenge.

For this weeks teaser, the start of Dylan's revenge. But the question arises. At what cost will it be achieved?

Excerpt:

Whether the heat came from his lifeforce or magic, the stone beneath Gareth's hand warmed. The pain vanished, replaced by exultation.

Thoughts in two voices rang in his head. One was his own. The other held anger nurtured by ages of imprisonment. “I am free,” Dylan yelled. “Revenge will be mine!”

Strength from an unknown source surged through Gareth’s body. He rolled to his knees, fumbled at his boot and withdrew a dagger. Fighting back a groan, he reached out with a blood-stained hand and pulled himself upright. He pushed off the rock and stood, his weapons at the ready. He wavered.

“Help me, Dylan,” Gareth begged.

“What I have is yours,” Dylan answered.

Power, even greater than what Gareth imagined possible, filled his frame. The encroaching darkness withdrew. Now steady on his feet, he assumed a defensive stance. “Colwynn, take care of Maerva. Don’t worry about me.” A weapon in each hand, he tested their weight. “I can pull my own freight.”

“So you think,” Nemor snarled.

Gareth judged the two monks in front of him and the one menacing Maerva. Hard eyes and the way they held steady a pair of short swords indicated none of the three were strangers to weapons or fighting. In flashing images he reviewed Maerva’s skill with the blade. She had learned a lot during their lessons and sparring sessions. Still the reality was inescapable. She was no match for the man she faced.

“Then,” Dylan ordered, “we take them all.” His thought came so clear into Gareth’s mind it seemed it was his own. No one will harm Maerva.

Gareth felt the other’s bloodlust. Nemor will die.

Energy which could only have come from the imprisoned mage flooded Gareth. Muscles exhausted from hard riding now felt fully rested. Although he knew he would pay later, he accepted the gift. His determination to save Maerva matched Dylan’s.

Unsure how long their blended strength would last, Gareth knew he could not afford to wait. He charged the taller of the monks.

V is for Ver

V is for Ver

So, what is a Ver. In Imprisoned in Stone, Ver is a large, raw-boned dog. Because of the dog's red coloring, I used an image of an Irish Setter as the inspiration for Ver. Besides assisting in hunts to provide food for those hiding on the island, Ver helped repeal invaders who attacked the island sanctuary.

Showing the stamina and loyalty of the breed,
after being set adrift with the child after her parents were killed, Ver survived and became her protector.

An excerpt from Imprisoned in Stone.
Prayers that Dylan would arrive in time to help and that the two of them would be able to hold off the Brethren did not slow Colwynn’s preparations. The weight of the sword belt around his hip provided little comfort, nor did the dagger he slid into his boot. With practiced movements, he strapped panniers on Gramail’s four-footed guardians and stuffed a jacket, blanket, food, and a skin of fruit juice into the leather bags.

A step took him to Gramail who watched in wide-eyed silence. “Sweetie, we are having some big people visitors. I need you to go with the dogs to the ship cave and stay there until called.” As he spoke, Gramail’s trusting look added to Colwynn’s determination to make certain no harm came to the child. She had lost enough already. Kneeling, he dropped to her level. “It’s time to play the ‘shhhsh’ game. You need to stay quiet with the dogs, do you understand?”

She nodded and with a wise look on her face put a finger to her lips.

Colwynn patted each dog on the head. Opening the lower half of the door, and kissing the four-year-old, he gave a command he prayed he would not regret. “Ver, Da, protect Gramail. Go, cave. Go, now.”

He watched the dogs trot out with Gramail running between them. Before they covered more than a dozen paces, the rest of the pack joined them. Brown and red forms flowed across the sand. Colwynn could barely make out Gramail’s dark curls above the dog’s backs.

Disclaimer: I received a copy of Ancient Curse as gift. That did not make me read the book from cover to cover, the description, the historical setting, fine prose and strong, sensuous characters did.
